STIRRINGS
One man band releases powerful new CD
Stirrings is the new release and high point in the careening and eclectic musical career of Patchogue, Long Island's Chris P. Cauley. Cauley has made his mark on the local music scene on several levels, as he describes
on his website, "I am a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, soundman, gear lender, producer, indie promoter, and friend, working in the vigorous Patchogue music scene." Ask anyone in the south shore music scene about
"ChrisP" and they will describe one or more of his many contributions to the scene's musicians and fans. Cauley prides himself on being an integral part of his artistic community and celebrates the power of the Arts to bring
people together. He has promoted several ongoing music events in venues such as Fadeley's Pub and Brickhouse Brewery that feature original singer-songwriters and bands. He has payed drums and/or percussion
in popular local acts like My Last band, KarmaSutra and the current incarnation of Jay Scott's band. Often, Cauley's work supporting and promoting other musicians has been at the expense of his own music. Stirrings changes all that. Like several of his past projects, all of which are available on his website, Stirrings features Cauley on everything including vocals, guitars, bass, drums, percussion, production and mastering.
The only exception came in mixing Stirrings." I have a strictly DIY approach that involves writing, recording, producing and distributing my art, " Cauley explained, but when it came time to mix the tracks on Stirrings, he enlisted the help of Bill Herman of Paraddidle Records,"because I wanted some objectivity in the process and I
trust Bill Herman's experience and musical good sense. His contributions were invaluable." On first listen, Cauley's sound is reminiscent of the power produced by 90's Grunge stalwarts Nirvana and
Soundgarden.. However, listen more closely and subtleties that owe their inspiration to Cauley favorites Sonic Youth and The Velvet Underground unveil themselves. Examples of this experimental edge include the slide
guitar work and haunting vocal harmony on "Guess Its True," the sonic and dissonant explosions of the bridge sections of Autumn Leaves and Chair up On The Wire, and the wicked lead guitar work in What To Do.
Cauley's goal has always been simple, he states, " I just want to take people for a ride with the music. Get them out of their heads. I want them to pull their headphones off and be total in a total haze for a second........... then think to themselves, Holy Shit!! That is only one person." Cauley's many talents extend beyond his musical work - he is a poet and painter as well. He lives in East Patchogue with his wife Jennifer, who he dedicated Stirrings to.
