Graham Parker 2/15/09 Part 1

Graham Parker at Stony Brook's University Cafe
Sunday February 15th 2 for annual "Valentine's Day is Over" show.
For nearly 30 years, Graham Parker has been slinging his signature sound, earning a spot in the pantheon of influential rock 'n' roll figures. Since his early days with The Rumour, Parker has coupled punk's energy with his deeply rooted love of American R&B, country, and soul music.
Parker's career took an interesting turn in 1988 when he recorded his Live in America album, in which he took his electric guitar and wowed audiences with a solo show. In recent years, Parker has recorded a series of acclaimed albums showing his songwriting skills as strong as ever. According to Roger Holland (in Pop Matters), Parker's most recent release, 2007's Don’t Tell Columbus is "easily the best thing Parker’s done since his 1970s heyday." (Photo by Bob Huebsch)

Ellis Paul University Cafe 1/18/09
This is Ellis' annual visit to the Cafe, this year bringing a batch of new songs. Among Ellis' new songs is "Hurricane Angel," a powerful work dealing with the social impact of Hurricane Katrina, thereby continuing to place Ellis in the vanguard of contemporary acoustic music while reaching back to the populist tradition of Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan. with Rick Gedney
Terence Martin, one of acoustic music’s top ranked singer-songwriters, showcases a new collection of brilliant songs from Even Trade, his recent CD, as well as songs from Martin’s four previous releases which have made him a favorite of University Café audiences. His powerful songs flow with hauntingly poetic images and elements of folk, blues, and country, the work of an extraordinarily skillful writer whose craftsmanship is first-rate.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Martin moved East in 1997 to become part of the flourishing NY acoustic music scene. His musical background includes performing as a double bassist in the Burbank Symphony and in several touring rock bands. Also a published poet, his poetry is included in the anthology, “Four Valley Poets.”
Performances at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and the Boston Folk Festival, among others, have won him a passionate following. Multi-instrumentalist Dan Bonis and bass player Gordon Roehrer accompany Martin in this Café performance from November 2, 2008. (www.martinsongs.com)

The Turn Live in the Lobby11/17/08
The Turn is a rock band from Rockville Centre, NY
whose lyrical and melodic music is influenced by artists such as The
Beatles, Pink Floyd, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Stevie Wonder, John Mayer and
Jeff Buckley. They combine soulful blues-driven guitar with
hard-hitting drums and melodies; piano and organ add a taste of
something Motown. The band has been playing and performing together
since August 2007 and in February 2008 released their debut EP, "LONG
STORY SHORT."
The Turn was founded by Brian Ripps, the band’s
lead vocalist and lead guitarist, and Pat McDermott, who sings
background vocals and plays guitars and keyboards. Brian and Pat
collaborate on writing the band’s original material.
About Live in the Lobby
Called "A felicitous space for music listening" by the New York Times (6/17/07), Live in the Lobby is a series of concerts for small audiences held in the lobby of the Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts (PTPA). The series, which began in the winter of 2005, has been called "one of Long Island's premier small venues for independent singers and songwriters" (L.I. Advance 8/23/07) because they feature original music from Long Island area artists and do not book "tribute" or "cover" bands. PTPA Board member Christopher Capobianco and his fellow volunteers convert the beautiful art deco lobby into a small concert hall with seating for 50 and standing room for another 50, creating an intimate setting with excellent acoustics. "Live in the Lobby" is a team effort of volunteers who believe in having a place for original music and give up a lot of time to make it happen. The performers appreciate it too, and although it's not a "big money" gig, the series is booked for months in advance because the word is out that this is one very special place to play. Advance tickets at the PTPA box office or by phone at 631.207.1313. Visit Liveinthelobby.com or myspace.com/liveinthelobbyatPTPA for the complete schedule and links to the performers.
