Independent Release (1997)
Bob Wescott came to play. And like the heart of American Music born in the fields, loading docks and back porches, Bob began as a teenager playing guitar in “open air” venues commonly called the street. During the 60's, Bob played in the basket houses (pass the hat for money) of Greenwich Village and was one of the first members of the Wes Houston Band.
Now, Paradiddle Records is pleased to offer the Bob Westcott’s perennial favorite “Rollin’ Along” in our catalog of Long Island talent. Bob’s music is community and commonality conveyed by a folksy, comfortable appreciation of our successes and failings. He sings of us and he plays for us rather than sing about us as he plays to us. Bob is going along for the ride, while making a few pointed observations, and we are welcome to join.
The instrumentals on “Rollin’ Along” are exceptionally pleasing. The simple beauty of the tunes disguise the incredible intricacy of technique but reveal Bob’s appreciation of the guitar’s capabilities and expression. “Dance of the Copperhead” and “Pettit Petite” stand out here. There is a distinct sense of the unity between the guitarist and his guitar.
And then there are the stories: the stories of trains, love, weather, society and the comfortable and uncomfortable in each. There isn’t a sense of right or wrong in Bob’s songs though he clearly has an opinion as in “Election Day.” No doubt he conveys disapproval but not condemnation. He can’t seem to condemn us, or “them,” as he knows too well he is one of us and a part of all of us. At Paradiddle Records, we offer you this collection of Bob Westcott’s Music for the appreciation of his musical talent, his sense of the human condition and his ability to convey both with simple, folksy elegance. He has been doing this, to the delight of varying audiences, for decades. Listen and you will hear the same.
