March 18—FATHOM
CELTIC FANTASY ROCK: “A
paradoxical rendezvous of past and present.”
SPECIAL GUEST POOR OL'
SEAMUS ROCK & BLUES REVIEW Patchogue's own Seamus Sullivan in a special
acoustic set of his original songs.
With a unique blend of traditional Celtic melodies and the pure thunder of
progressive and classic rock, Fathom is destined to musically innovate, as
well define their own “Celtic Fantasy Rock”. Fathom boasts an energetic
live show and signature sound setting themselves apart from any formulaic
boredom of standard rock radio. "Traditional Celtic music reaches down
into people's souls and shakes them and says 'wake up, its time to dance,
shout and have a good time', declares guitarist Robert Muller. "We have
hybridized that ancient sound with monster guitar riffs, added some
Guinness for good measure and we are thunderstruck with the result!"
Fathom’s songs and sound explore
landscapes of Celtic myth breathed through modern and traditional
instruments. Their 2005 self-released CD “Celtic Rocks” follows their
critically acclaimed “Pollution Blues” CD. “Our fourth album entitled “The
Last Battle”, truly was a quest and a battle to create, but now it
complete, and we have forged a prodigious and heavy sound,” explains lead
singer/songwriter John DiBartolo.
Fathom's “Last Battle”, is a CD that
leans more towards heavy and progressive rock than ever before, but there
are acoustic gems here as well. John’s poetic lyrics meander through
history, Tolkien-esque myth, and weighty spiritual topics to the primal
theme of lost love and future redemption. After "The Last Battle", a 'best
of' collection was released in 2009 entitled "Crest of the Best".
Mandolin/Violin Player John Farrell’s
mastery of traditional Irish music is a driving force in Fathom’s Celtic
lifeblood. Farrell states, “Irish and classical music was all I played
growing up. I’m really excited to be able to assimilate traditional Irish
music in a non-traditional sense with the band.” Mr. Farrell most recently
commissioned a custom Bacorn electric "Les Paul" style mandolin complete
with "Jameson Whiskey cap" volume dials!
Fathom has broken the boundaries of the
traditional Celtic music scene. The band has performed to main stream rock
audiences by sharing the stage with numerous, diverse and classic artists
such as Hot Tuna, Jason Bonham, and Tom Tom Club, as well as folk legends
like Fairport Convention and then the whole gamut of Celtic giants such as
the Wolfe Tones, Black 47, The Prodigals, Eileen Ivers, The Makem Brothers
and countless others. There are no boundaries to Fathom’s musical
landscape.
April 8—THE MICHAEL JAZZ TRIO
Paradiddle Records presents The Michael Jazz
Trio and more. The Michael Jazz Trio consists of three brothers —
15-year-old Matthew on keyboard, 13-year-old David on alto and tenor sax,
and 8-year-old Jordan on drums. The three were born and raised in Central
Islip and according to their parents were musically inclined at a young
age. Inspired by music legends like the late John Coltrane and Duke
Ellington, the boys perform their own compositions and classic jazz and
continue to fine-tune their talent while maintaining academic excellence.
Their first album is being recorded and produced by Paradiddle Records of
Huntington. Special guests to be announced.
May 6—NEW YORK FUNK EXCHANGE with special guest CLAUDIA JACOBS
NYFE brings their big band sound to the
lobby with a unique sound that combines the roots of funk, soul, rhythm
and blues and jazz, along with their own, one-of-a-kind arrangements and
dynamic rhythms. The band describes their music as a throwback to early
'70s soul-funk music like James Brown. NYFE features several members of
Dynamic Stew, who were a big hit in 2006 at Live In the Lobby and the
first Patchogue Jam in 2007 Combining the talents of Serena Fortier
(vocals), Ray Holman (drums/vocals), Matt Fox (bass guitar), Jamey Zebrack
(keys/vocals), Matty G (guitar), Mozard Pierre-Jacques (Trombone), Mike
Farrell (Sax) and Nick Martino (trumpet), this band formed in 2007 and has
since performed original music throughout the northeast. Each member is a
master at his respective instrument, but all possess the virtue of harmony
when playing together. Each member of the NYFE has a deep respect and
enthusiasm for music and its ongoing creative process. The band just
finished their debut album, "Funkonomic Stimulus Plan," which will be
available at the show and on iTunes. For more information on, visit
www.nyfunkexchange.com. We happily welcome back Claudia Jacobs and her
group to open the show. Her terrific voice and great songs merge folk,
rock, blues, funk and country and her set will kick off the night in grand
style. Learn more and hear her songs at www.claudiajacobs.com
June 10—SEASON FINALE—AN EVENING WITH MILES TO DAYTON
With a well-crafted mix of folk, rock, classical and funk, this Long
Island based ensemble brings an honest message of love, life and laughter
to each performance. The M2D recipe is simple: four-part vocal harmony
textures, solid songwriting, improvisational violin and cello, and an
infectious rhythm section that stirs up the creative stew. The family
chemistry adds to the onstage fun, while the unique instrumentation truly
delivers an eclectic sound portrait, with a comfortable, down-home vibe in
all of the songs and presentation. Miles to Dayton will leave a lasting
impression on your ears, relying on quality musicianship and a melody that
will carry you back to the next show.
The band features the talents of vocalist
Krista (March) Preddice, often compared to the likes of Natalie Merchant
and Dolores O'Riordan. Accomplished songwriter Jonathan Preddice also
shares lead vocal duty, and plays guitar and cello in the band. Dave March
adds to the package by delivering pocket bass lines and heartfelt vocals.
Violinist Leanne (Preddice) Strom wields her violin with extreme presence
and maturity, using her classical upbringing to add many interesting
colors and textures to the m2d ensemble. Newcomer drummer Brian Kroll has
only elevated this family band to new heights, providing an exciting and
funky edge to the overall sound, while lifting the songs up on a pedestal
for all to enjoy. With the successful release of two independent full
length albums in the past five years, "A long way back" (2005) and "Rise"
(2007), Miles to Dayton has developed a strong regional following. With a
newly bolstered lineup, the band has set it sights on releasing a third
album in 2010 that will promises to be it's finest work to date.

LeE HARVey OsMOND
Sunday, February 14th 2:00 P.M.
LeE HARVey OsMOND is the brainchild of Tom Wilson, from Blackie &
the Rodeo Kings. Tom brought together an eclectic group of friends, a
few Cowboy Junkies, and some Skydiggers, to develop a new sound they
christened acid folk. With hypnotic rhythms and a lot of groove the
group of friends now known as LeE HARVeY OsMOND, created a sound that
comes creeping out of the Northern woods and is oozing across the Great
Lakes into the South, following the same path The Band did forty years
before.
A Quiet Evil, the first release by LeE HARVeY OsMOND. is produced by
Michael Timmons (Cowboy Junkies) and includes performances by Tom
Wilson, Margo Timmons, Michael Timmon, Colin Linden, Brent Titcomb .
Whether performing as a stripped-down show by Tom Wilson and a friend
or two, or with a full band that could include just about anyone on the
Canadian music scene, LeE HARVeY OsMOND will take every audience member
along with them on their hypnotic musical. (www.myspace.com/lhosmond)

With a dozen critically acclaimed albums to his credit, he has
developed a strong national following in the indie folk/rock scene
through his relentless touring. Starting his musical career in
Milwaukee at Marquette University, he honed his performing skills while
traveling in Ireland. He later spent several years in Boston where he

Garnet Rogers
Sunday, March 7th 2:00 P.M.
Garnet Rogers returns for his third concert at The University Cafe.
Sing Out magazine hailed him as "the greatest interpreter and vocalist
performing on the contemporary folk scene." Garnet set out on the road
at age eighteen as a full-time working musician with his brother Stan
Rogers, the Canadian folk legend. Establishing himself as a solo artist
following his brother’s tragic death in 1983, Garnet has delivered
performances centered on his extraordinary songs, his unsurpassed
playing on a host of guitars, and his over the top humor and
lightning-quick wit.
Add his name to the select list of the giants in the guitar world today
and couple that with brilliant songs often centering on people who are
not obvious heroes, and you have the makings of an outstanding
afternoon of music. (www.garnetrogers.com)

Rachael Davis and Friends
Sunday, March 14th 2:00 P.M.
(presented in collaboration with the Greater Port Jefferson - Northern Brookhaven Arts Council)
Rachael Davis began singing on-stage at the age of two with her
parents. Ten years into her solo career, she’s shared the stage with
such musical luminaries as Taj Mahal, Fred Eaglesmith, Josh Ritter,
Prairie Home Companion regulars Robin and Linda Williams, folk divas
Claudia Schmidt and Sally Rogers, jazz legends Marcus Belgrave and
Winston Walls, and many others. In 2003, she took grand prize in the
Telluride Bluegrass Festival’s Troubadour Contest. Her influences range
from the jazz stylings of Ella Fitzgerald to the soulful pop vocals of
Patty Griffin. A contemporary songwriter, she’s equally at home singing
anything from traditional ballads to Cole Porter to Joe Henry. (www.rachaeldavis.com)
Rachael played The University Cafe in April, 2005, during our first year of concerts and we are delighted to welcome her back.

Mark Erelli
Sunday, March 28th 2:00 P.M.
Mark Erelli's visit to The University Cafe continues our tradition of
inviting world-class guitarists and songwriters to perform on our
stage. A wizard on the acoustic and electric guitar, mandolin, and lap
steel, Erelli has toured with Lori McKenna, Catie Curtis, Kris
Delmhorst and Josh Ritter and would be known simply for his
instrumental virtuosity were it not for the fact that he is an
extraordinary songwriter, perhaps best known for his song "The Only
Way," recorded by Ellis Paul and Vance Gilbert.
His seven CDs showcase a range of musical interests of
Erelli, even including western swing on Hillbilly Pilgrim, but it is
his songs of political and social commentary that have left their mark.
According to the Washington Post, "Erelli addresses tough issues with
the grit of John Hiatt and the melancholy beauty of Ron Sexsmith." (www.markerelli.com)
